Torsion Points on Modular Curves

Let N ≥ 23 be a prime number. In this paper, we prove a conjecture of Coleman, Kaskel, and Ribet about the Q-valued points of the modular curve X0(N) which map to torsion points on J0(N) via the cuspidal embedding. We give some generalizations to other modular curves, and to noncuspidal embeddings of X0(N) into J0(N).

Modular Curves of Infinite Level

The goal of this course is to investigate an object which might be called X(p∞), and which appears as the inverse limit of the classical modular curves X(p). Informally, X(p∞) ought to classify elliptic curves E together with a Zp-basis for the Tate module Tp(E). (A disclaimer is in order, lest I be accused of false advertising: We won’t be studying all of X(p∞), but rather a piece of it corres...

Special Points on Products of Modular Curves

We prove the André–Oort conjecture on special points of Shimura varieties for arbitrary products of modular curves, assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis. More explicitly, this means the following. Let n ≥ 0, and let Σ be a subset of Cn consisting of points all of whose coordinates are j-invariants of elliptic curves with complex multiplications. Then we prove (under GRH) that the irreduc...

Cycles on modular varieties and rational points on elliptic curves

This is a summary of a three-part lecture series given at the meeting on “Explicit methods in number theory” that was held in Oberwolfach from July 12 to 18, 2009. The theme of this lecture series was the explicit construction of algebraic points on elliptic curves from cycles on modular varieties. Given a fixed elliptic curve E over Q, the goal is to better understand the group E(Q̄) of algebra...

Fitting Quadratic Curves to Data Points

Fitting quadratic curves (a.k.a. conic sections, or conics) to data points (digitized images) is a fundamental task in image processing and computer vision. This problem reduces to minimization of a certain function over the parameter space of conics. Here we undertake a thorough investigation of that space and the properties of the objective function on it. We determine under what conditions t...
